Internal Adapter Eliminates Need For External One
July 2002 Issue
Published Date: July 01, 2002
The MPS family of internal ac adapter modules promises to displace external ac power adapters in a variety of consumer and business electronic products. It includes an input receptacle and is designed to plug directly into a connector on a pc board, eliminating the need for internal wires. It reportedly can supply most popular dc voltages (i.e., 3.3V to 12V) directly from universal ac sources (85 to 265 Vac) without the need for internal cables. The module’s off-line switching design is said to consume less power than systems using external transformers, and it doesn’t consume power when the product is turned off. The compact units have regulatory approval for sale in North America, Europe and most of Asia. They offer overload protection, allowing output shut-off under short-circuit or over-current conditions. The first member of the MPS family to go commercial is the MPS100, a 10W output, 75% efficiency (min.) ac adapter module that has a starting price of $3 each in volume quantities.
