Caps Supply Peak Power To Portable Devices
May 2003 Issue
Published Date: May 01, 2003
Acting as a power bridge between standard capacitors and batteries, the 4.6V electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) come in values of 1.5F and 3.5F. Their primary function is to supply peak power to portable and handheld devices that transmit data for 10s or more. Proprietary electrodes are said to be behind the higher capacitance and significantly lower equivalent series resistance (ESR)—e.g., a 3.5F EDLC exhibits an ESR of 150 m?dc at current levels over 1A. Performance is reportedly also enhanced through use of an activated carbon powder in the electrode coating process. Here, the powder is said to allow manipulation of the thickness and width of the coated layer, permitting production of electrodes of varying shapes and capacitances at a lower cost. Both EDLCs measure 31 x 17.5 x 10 mm and weigh 5.3g. Pricing begins at $2 each/2,000. For more details, call Michael Choi at NESSCAP CO. LTD., Suwon, South Korea. 82-31-219-0682.
