MCU Melds ARM And DSP Cores With MP3 Engine
May 2003 Issue
Published Date: May 01, 2003
Called the industry's first such device, the ML675200 microcontroller (MCU) integrates both ARM7 and Teak DSP cores with an MP3 audio processing engine, with the resulting chip targeted at consumer MP3, Windows Media Audio (WMA), and speech-processing applications. The MCU is available in ROM-less and 256 KB flash ROM versions, with both devices also packing 32 KB of SRAM. And to minimize part counts, a range of peripherals—namely, a speech codec, USB 2.0 controller, four-channel DMA controller, PLL, external memory controller, timers, analog channels, UART ports, and GPIOs—have been integrated on-chip. Maximum operating frequencies are 30 MHz for the CPU and 60 MHz for the DSP, with the controller's operating temperatures ranging from -30°C to 70°C. Samples are available now with production scheduled for the third quarter; prices are expected to start at less than $10 each/100,000 for the ROM-less version.
