UPS Derives Power From Fuel Cell
November 2003 Issue
Published Date: November 19, 2003
The Evolution uninterruptible power supply (UPS) employs Ballard's Nexa RM series, hydrogen-based fuel cell modules to provide backup power up to 3 kVA. As long as fuel is being supplied to the cells, backup duration is determined by the size and quantity of the fuel-storage tanks. Typical duration ranges from four to 24 hours. Hydrogen is delivered via 31" high-Q or 51" high-K gas cylinders from Praxair. The Evolution UPS mounts in a standard 19" rack and includes all connections, N+1 redundancy, and a variety of safety features. Measuring 5U and weighing 85 lb., each module includes a ±24 Vdc output and can deliver up to 40A of output current. MGE UPS SYSTEMS INC., Costa Mesa, CA. (800) 523-0142.
