Memory Boosts Graphics With Speed And Density
March 2006 Issue
Published Date: March 22, 2006
Employing 80-nm process technology, the company has unveiled what it calls the fastest graphics memory chip to date. The GDDR4 graphics DRAM chip provides significantly faster processing speeds than an earlier prototype version. The device has a 12.8 GB/s processing speed, 30% faster than the previous prototype, which allows it to transfer the equivalent of up to six DVD-quality movies every second. The 512-Mb GDDR4 graphics DRAM comes with 32 I/O pins, each of which transfers data at 3.2 Gb/s. With this type of processing speed, the company will be able to offer video card manufacturers the bandwidth needed to create life-like movements and richly textured imagery similar to that of cinematic movies.
