Wi-Fi Chips Break Power Barriers

October 31, 2007
Stating a power consumption of 70% less than comparable devices, the ROCm AR6002 family of Wi-Fi chips draws near-zero standby power and incurs nominal impact on battery life in active mode. Reportedly, the devices will take more than 100 hours to deplete a standard 3.7V, 800-mAh phone battery in continual VoIP mode. In another example, users can download 200 GB of data before depleting the same battery. The AR6002 family also provides full-speed, hardware-based security and driver support for Windows Embedded CE/Mobile and Linux. The chips are available in single 2.4-GHz and dual-band 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz options in CSP or BGA packages. Currently sampling, expect volume production in the first quarter of 2008.
