Single/Dual Cell Charger Accelerates Battery Repletion

December 28, 2007
The premier member of a 1A battery-charger family, the AAT3663 charges up to two li-ion cells in series from either an ac adapter or a USB port. The device integrates the company’s Digital Thermal Loop charge reduction circuit, which monitors die temperature and gradually steps down charge current to avoid thermal shutdown and claims responsibility for faster charge rates. It accepts a 4V to 13.2V input voltage range and supports programmable charge currents from 100 mA to 1A via an external resistor. Quiescent current is less than 6 ?A. Other features include a programmable charge termination current function that sends the device into sleep mode if charging current dips below a pre-defined threshold. Additionally, an integrated programmable charge timer shuts down charging functions should a cell go defective or a disconnection occurs. Available in a thermally-enhanced, 14-pin TDFN package measuring 3 mm x 3 mm with an operating temperature range from -40ºC to +85ºC, price for the AAT3663 is $1.38 each/1,000.
